It’s a day at the races! While the Kentucky Derby is a short race, it’s the fanfare around the event that’s the most fun. The derby hats, the classic mint juleps, and the fashion are just some of the elements I love. If you can’t get to Kentucky to watch the race, it’s so much fun to host your own Kentucky Derby viewing party at home.
I put together a Kentucky Derby party inspiration board to get some ideas going for throwing this fun party.
Dress / Hat / Mint Julep Cup / Pedestal Server / Floral Wreath / Horses
The Fashion: As the hostess you know it’s all about the derby hat! I love this one because you can wear it for the party and then use it all summer at the beach. A cute a-line dress is perfection.
The Decor: A floral wreath not only adds in some pretty color but it also gives a nod to the winner’s circle. And I had to add in the little toy horses too. I love the idea of either leaving them as is and scattered around the food table. Personally, I would paint them a pretty color like hot pink or gold!
The Beverage: How about a classic mint julep! It’s so easy to make and so refreshing. Don’t worry if you don’t have the fancy silver cups to serve them in, any glass will do.
Ingredients
- Leaves from 5 mint sprigs
- 1/2 ounce of simple syrup
- 2 1/2 ounces of bourbon whiskey
- Crushed ice
Instructions
- Place mint leaves and simple syrup into the bottom of your cup.
- Muddle the leaves and syrup together.
- Add the bourbon.
- Add in crushed ice and stir until combined and the glass becomes frosty.
- Garnish with mint and serve.
This is such an easy and fun party to pull together. The race itself provides the edge of your seat excitement and maybe you’ll have some “high stakes” betting with fun prizes.
